The Best Writing Oscar won by Orson Welles was sold at auction on Tuesday in Los Angeles for $861,000, which narrowly beat the bid from magician David Copperfield.

According to CBS News, the Oscar that actor Orson Welles received in 1942 for his Citizen Kane screenplay was sold on Tuesday in L.A. by Nate D. Sanders Auctions for $861,000.

The auction attracted bidders from around the world, including magician David Copperfield, who lost out to an anonymous winner who paid $861,000. Copperfield is a huge fan of Oscar Welles, who was also a magician and hosted the first David Copperfield television special.

The golden Oscar statue given to Welles was thought to be lost until it turned up in 1994 when cinematographer Gary Graver tried to sell the award but was stopped by daughter Beatrice Welles.
