Simon Cowell is still up for a super final singing showdown that would pit the best singers of The X Factor against those of The Voice and American Idol.
The Deadbolt joined a call for The X Factor with Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid on Wednesday where Cowell confirmed that he’s still up for a super showdown between the singers of The X Factor, The Voice and American Idol. The follow up with Cowell came only a day after Simon tweeted that he’d like to see a singing showdown between the top three talent shows on television.
“I thought it was a great idea,” said Cowell on the call.
“I thought it would be something different. They’ve [The Voice and American Idol] both bottled it for now, but I spoke to L.A. and we’re both up for it. I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen or not. It kind of felt like the musical Super Bowl and I love that idea. But maybe we’ll just have to compete in the Grammys or something going forward.”
Although Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine of The Voice thought the idea of a singing super final was a great idea, Nigel Lythgoe of American Idol was a bit more sarcastic about Simon’s suggestion. “The problem is,” tweeted Lythgoe, “the Idol winner will be a star by then.”
So, will a super final between The X Factor, The Voice, and American Idol ever get off the ground? According to Cowell, never say never.
“I think we’ve got to hear from the networks. At the moment, Nigel [Lythgoe] and Adam [Levine] commented. I have no idea whether Fox or NBC think it’s a good idea. At the end of the day, I think they’re the ones who will have the ultinmate whether this will happen or not. But if you guys push it, it might happen.”
