H&M, one of the world’s largest clothing retailers, recently released their Autumn 2012 Digital Lookbook filled with European styles for the mass market.

Although it’s not quite summer, excitement is always in the air when H&M releases anything new and the 2012 Autumn Collection shouldn’t be a disappointment for fans of the elite retailer. Filled with accessories, cable knit cardigans, tapered pants, and vintage, satin sports jackets, the H&M Autumn collection for 2012 has something for everyone, and maybe everything for those hardcore H&M fans out there.

For Autmn 2012, the use of straight lines, tapered jackets, and shoulder pads are very much in harmony with current trends on the market. H&M stays true to its European roots, mixing gold lame fabrics with patchwork leggings and bedazzled t-shirts. Part of what makes H&M so appealing is that there really is something for everyone. Although the Autumn 2012 collection deviates slightly from that particular marketing tactic, it’s still one of the more well-rounded collections ahead of the Fall 2012 market.

The Autumn 2012 collection also relies heavily on a blend of different textures and trading in more traditional design concepts for an edgier look. High-waisted trousers are sure to be the hottest ticket come Fall, but pieces like the long-sleeved black mini dress really add an Autumn pop.

Layers are also a big part of the collection and it shows, with lace blouses coupled with knitted cropped jackets. The use of multiple textures and sizing for each piece make for complete outfits.

At this point, longtime fans and potential new customers of H&M get a blend of European styling better catered to a North American market. What do I mean by this? Simply put, North Americans are not as adventurous when it comes to personal styles. Sure we borrow heavily from our counterparts across the pond when it suits us, but you’d be hard pressed to find more than five Americans with the confidence to rock patchwork leggings just for a day out in the shops. H&M fully understands this, they know exactly what will sell and why, which is part of the reason they are so successful.

Still, as a consumer, you have to know what works for your body type and what doesn’t. Even the outfit that you think is stunning on a mannequin might not look the same on you. Make fashion work for you, and not the other way around.
