The Spice Girls are bringing their collective “girl power” to the stage in Viva Forever!, a new jukebox musical based on the all-girl group’s music.
This week, Spice Girls Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, and Melanie Brown were on hand in London at the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel to announce Viva Forever!, a new musical named after their 1997 hit that will showcase the music of the popular 90s all-girl group. The production team behind Viva Forever! includes Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), who wrote the musical, and producer Judy Craymer, the woman behind “Mamma Mia.” Some of the songs included in the musical will be “Wannabe,” ”Spice Up Your Life,” and ”Mama”.
As the BBC reveals, Viva Forever! will explore the “‘bitter reality of fame’ brought by a TV talent show” as two girls get entangled in today’s celebrity obsessed culture.
Although the Spice Girls themselves won’t be in the musical, nor is the production based on their rise to stardom, Viva Forever! will use the music of the group as the driving musical force behind the jukebox stage concept.
The Spice Girls sold 75 million albums and became one of the most successful all-girl groups in music. Their 2007-2008 reunion tour alone was one of the highest grossing tours of the last decade and proved that they still have what the fans really, really want.
Viva Forever! will premiere in London at the Piccadilly Theatre in December 2012.
