The Hobbit trilogy films now have titles and release dates after New Line and Warner Bros. announced the news this week to finalize their schedule.

As fans of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings already know, the first film in the Peter Jackson directed trilogy is called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and will be released on December 14, 2012.

The second film title has been confirmed as The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and will hit theaters on December 13, 2013.

The third film in The Hobbit trilogy is now known as The Hobbit: There and Back Again and will be released on July 18, 2014.

Interestingly, the second Hobbit film was originally “There and Back” while the third was initially titled “The Desolation of Smaug.”

I think it’s obvious the studios are milking this for all the revenue they can, two films was pushinng the limit on the amount of content in the first book. Three is a blatant money grab. The hobbit was by far thsmallest and most simplistic of the 4 middle earth books.

WHat? The movie studios are greedy? That’s not possible.

It is small and simple, but it also has many, many story gaps that can be filled by the film. I think this will be a rare circumstance where a story is improved in its film adaptation.

Sure but at the same time cramming The Hobbit into a single 2 or 3 hour block will be nothing less than an injustice to the book.

Maybe Jackson is releasing the extended versions to the theaters this time instead of waiting for the DVD sales. Of course that begs the question of whether or not the DVD releases will be super-extended directors cut versions.
