Emmy Awards Fashion Recap: Best and Worst Dressed

241 days ago by Nadya Vlassoff

The 64th Emmy Awards took place on Sunday in Los Angeles where stars hit the red carpet in full fashion force with their best and worst designer choices.

Although viewers were eager to see the best in television over the past year, there were also plenty of fashion winners and losers on the red carpet at this year’s Emmys.

When it came to designers and who the stars chose, some stars were stylishly fantastic while others prompted fans to ask, “What are you wearing?”

Here are our picks for the Best and Worst Dressed at the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards:

Best Dressed:

Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, Kiernan Shipka, Giuliana Rancic, Mario Lopez, Kevin Costner

Red carpet darlings like Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara rarely make mistakes and they both looked fashionably flawless on Sunday evening despite the 90 degree afternoon heat in Los Angeles.

For the Emmys, Heidi Klum wore a seafoam green Alexandre Vauthier gown. We know what you’re thinking: Seafoam green? It worked. Klum looked stunning in her altered high slits.

Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara wore the most brilliant outfit of the evening, a Zuhair Murad beaded form-fitting gown. Although Vergara overcame a slight wardrobe malfunction, the Latin beauty looked amazing in her sparkly number accessorized with 175 carats of Neil Lane Diamond Hollywood Jewels.

Young actress Kiernan Shipka of Mad Men was absolutely adorable in a custom-made Zac Posen dress with David Webb brooches. For a young girl of 12, Shipka shined at her third Emmy awards.

Giuliana Rancic was stunning in a Romona Keveza silk mermaid-esque gown. The new mom was all smiles on the red carpet as she worked for E!.

As for the guys at this year’s Emmys, Mario Lopez looked great in a navy suit. Emmy winner Kevin Costner, who won for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, looked dapper as he picked up his award in a black blazer with a white, unbuttoned dress-shirt. Oh yeah, and he skipped the tie, too. Kudos to Costner!

Worst Dressed:

Lena Dunham, Zooey Deschanel, Julianna Margulies

Lena Dunham, writer-creator of HBO’s hit, Girls, could have made a big splash on the Hollywood red carpet, but instead looked too matronly for her age. This year’s Emmy Awards ceremony was her time to shine and reap all the success of her hit show. Unfortunately, the blue lace Prada gown did her no favors.

Although New Girl star Zooey Deschanel makes quirky fashion work on Fox, her Reem Acra gown on ABC for the Emmys was a baby blue prom-dress disaster. Oddly, Deschanel didn’t look happy as she posed on the red carpet. Too much tulle and not enough shape! It was one dress that should have stayed on the rack. Stiill, despite her Emmy choice, Zooey Deschanel is gorgeous.

Julianna Margulies wore a Giambattista Valli couture gown with a floral print that was simply too much for her slim frame. Margulies was nominated for an Emmy and also presented but her gown was a definite miss for the two-time Emmy Award winning actress.

A for Effort:

Kat Dennings, Christina Hendricks, January Jones, Michelle Dockery

Although there were several fashion hits and misses at the Emmys on Sunday, there were a few head-scratching outfit choices as well.

Actress Kat Dennings, who plays tough girl Max on Two Broke Girls, looked fantastic from the neck up at the Emmys. It was the low-cut bodice of her J. Mendel gown that had everyone thinking wardrobe malfunction. Still, the color was perfect for Dennings who matched it with killer red lipstick.

Although Mad Men beauties Christina Hendricks and January Jones have been flawless on the red carpet in the past, the two co-stars were both slightly off the fashion mark on Sunday. Jones wore a black Zac Posen gown with a structured skirt while Hendricks donned a strapless gold Christian Siriano dress. With a few small tweaks, both dresses could have been fabulous, but the extra side ribbon of fabric wasn’t necessary.

Despite a running theme of blue gowns on Sunday, Downtown Abbey’s Michelle Dockery and her Louis Vuitton dress was a bit of a disappointment. If I had to spend all that time in a corset, I’d want a dress with a little more breathing room, too. A natural beauty away from the cameras, we’re rooting for her next red carpet appearance.

Who did you like on the red carpet at this year’s Emmy Awards?
