Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein return to the IFC airwaves for a third season of the Pacific Northwestern comedy Portlandia on January 4 at 10pm.
Although it’s been nearly a year between the second and third seasons of Portlandia, former Saturday Night Live regular Fred Armisen and lead guitarist/singer for Wild Flag, Carrie Brownstein, finally return to for a new season of the popular sketch comedy.
“That’s how everything is,” explained Armisen on a recent call about the break between seasons. “There are parts of Portlandia where I have no idea what the editors put in. That just comes with the territory.”
With Portlandia back on the air this coming Friday, it was a long break for Fred Armisen in between seasons but something he was used to in television.
“There’s so much post-production,” added the former SNL cast member. “And shooting is done so early in any medium, I think you almost purposely forget; it’s nice to forget.”
Prior to the third season premiere, however, both Armisen and Brownstein appeared in the December 9 episode of The Simpsons called “The Day The Earth Stood Cool” as two hipster neighbors from Portland who help Homer work through image issues.
As some fans may not know, Simpsons creator Matt Groening grew up in Portland.
“Ever since I’ve been going there,” Armisen added about The Simpsons vibe in Portland, “people have sort of pointed me in the direction of the stuff that Matt Groening incorporated into the show, like Lovejoy and Burnside and everything. I still get a little thrill every time I see those things and I’m like, ‘Oh wow, that’s totally The Simpsons.’ That’s where it all came from.”
Season 3 of Portlandia premieres on Friday, January 4 at 10pm on IFC.
