Ben Affleck directs and stars in Argo, about the Iran hostage crisis in 1979
Ben Affleck won Best Director at the 18th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on Thursday night for his work directing the political thriller Argo.
On Thursday night, the same day that the 2013 Oscar nominations were announced, Ben Affleck took home the Best Director award at the Critics’ Choice Awards for his 2012 film Argo about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.
The top directing honor came only hours after Affleck was snubbed by the Academy Awards despite Argo being nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.
“I would like to thank the Academy,” Affleck jokingly stated during his speech for the award. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding. This is the one that counts.”
Along with the directing award, Argo also won the Best Movie at the Critics’ Choice. Not a bad night for Ben.
Although director Kathryn Bigelow was also snubbed by the Academy for Zero Dark Thirty, actress Jessica Chastain won Best Actress at the Critics’ Choice ceremony for her role in the controversial political film about the CIA’s hunt for Osama bin Laden.
Jennifer Lawrence was a big winner at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Thursday after winning Best Actress in an Action Movie for The Hunger Games, Best Actress in a Comedy for Silver Linings Playbook, and another co-award for Best Acting Ensemble for the same film.
Upon the release of Argo, critics praised the political thriller along with Ben Affleck’s skill behind the camera as a director.
