The Guillermo del Toro produced horror film Mama won the Friday box office with $10 million in ticket sales to beat Zero Dark Thirty at $4.6 million.
Mama, produced by Guillermo del Toro and starring recent Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain, took in $10 million on Friday to lead the way over director Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial Zero Dark Thirty at $4.6 million and Broken City, starring Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg, with $3 million.
Both Mama and Zero Dark Thirty mark a one-two punch for Jessica Chastain who stars in both of Friday’s top grossing films. Industry analysts have Mama on track to finish the weekend at $30-35 million.
Rounding out the top five on Friday, Silver Linings Playbook finished fourth with $3 million while Gangster Squad underwhelmed in fifth at $2.7 million.
As for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the big screen, The Last Stand bombed with $2 million in ticket sales.
Following the release of several high profile films in recent weeks, Friday’s box office proved to be a weak showing for several new films. Although Mama led the way on Friday, Broken City failed to lure moviegoers into theaters while Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand completely tanked.
Does The Last Stand mark the end of an era for Arnold Schwarzenegger as a big box office draw? Well, let’s not count Arnold out just yet since Schwarzenegger recently signed to reprise his role as Conan the Barbarian in the upcoming 2014 film The Legend of Conan.
Mama marks the second horror film to top the box office in recent weeks after Texas Chainsaw 3D kicked off 2013 with a Friday win on January 5.
