The 2012 Grammy Award will take place on Sunday, February 12 in Los Angeles where Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj will compete for the Best New Artist award.
When the Grammy Awards get underway on Sunday night at the Staples Center in L.A., newcomers Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj will battle it out with The Band Perry, J.Cole, and Skrillex in the Best New Artist category. At this year’s Grammy Awards, Bon Iver picked up four Grammy nominations while Minaj earned three.
For Bon Iver, the multi-member indie folk group with singer Justin Vernon, the Grammy nominations include Best New Artist, Best Alternative Music Album, Song of the Year with “Holocene,” and Record of the Year. Although Bon Iver has been nominated in the Best New Artist category, the group is finally getting the recognition they deserve after making their debut in 2008 with the album For Emma, Forever Ago.
For Nicki Minaj, the 29-year old singer picked up Grammy nominations in the categories of Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album. Despite earning three Grammy nominations, Nicki Minaj actually began her career in 2007 before going on to release three mixtapes and her debut studio album in 2010. With her album Pink Friday, Nicki Minaj topped the U.S. Billboard 200, the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop chart, and the Billboard Rap Albums chart.
Interestingly, despite the battle between Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj for Best New Artist, breakout electronic music star Skrillex may surprise everyone at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night after landing five Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. Skrillex, who began his solo music career as an electronic music producer and musician in 2007 after leaving the band First To Last, also picked up Grammy nods for Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronica Album, Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical and Best Short Form Music Video.
Will Bon Iver beat Nicki Minaj as Best New Artist at this year’s Grammy Awards? Given how Nicki Minaj has been a lot more visible in the mainstream Pop and Hip Hop circles, there’s a good chance Minaj could come out the winner. With Bon Iver positioned for a win, it’s hard to say, but the band is no less deserving when it comes to talent. At the end of the Grammy night on Sunday, it may very well be Skrillex who has the last Grammy laugh on everyone.
What do you guys think, will Bon Iver beat Nicki Minaj as Best New Artist come Sunday Grammy night? Or is Skrillex the one to beat?
