Tennis star Maria Sharapova has been confirmed as the flag bearer for Team Russia at the opening ceremony of London 2012 Summer Olympics.
The news announcement of Maria Sharapova the Russian flag bearer at the London 2012 Olympics was confirmed this week through an official statement by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).
On her official website, Maria Sharapova shared her excitement about representing her country at the opening ceremony. “I am so honored, and especially excited as it will be my first Olympics in my career,” said the female tennis superstar.
Although Maria was aware of her nomination over the past two weeks, Sharapova was required to keep it a secret until an official announcement from the Russian Olympic Committee was made.
Despite her 4th round exit at Wimbledon just a week ago, Maria Sharapova is still one of the most recognized Russian athletes, not only in tennis circles but as a celebrity and fashion designer for Cole Haan.
Maria Sharapova missed the 2004 Athens Olympics when she failed to qualify and 2008 Beijing Olympics due to her shoulder injury. Sharapova has a good chance at the Gold Medal in Women’s Singles but faces fierce competition from Serena Williams, who recently won Wimbledon, and Victoria Azarenka, the current world #1.
