Will Rihanna Finally Debut at #1 with Unapologetic?

6 years ago by Nadya Vlassoff

Rihanna will release “Unapologetic” as a Diamonds Executive Platinum edition box set in December.

On Tuesday, November 27, Rihanna will finally release her new studio album, Unapologetic, which is expected to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Although Rihanna has twelve #1 singles to her name across six albums, she still doesn’t have a #1 charting album on Billboard. The highest position for Rihanna on the Billboard chart was #2 on 2007 with Good Girl Gone Bad. Should Unapologetic debut at #1, it will be the first time that Rihanna has hit the top spot.

At this point prior to release, industry analysts expect Unapologetic to sell between 225,000 and 250,000 copies in its first day. Not bad, but still a little short of Taylor Swift’s first day sales of Red at 262,000.

However, when Unapologetic debuts next Tuesday, Rihanna could face stiff competition from two other new releases in Kid Rock’s Rebel Soul and Phillip Phillips’ debut The World From the Side of the Moon.

Although Kid Rock and Phillip Phillips should sell big next week, they’d need to move musical mountains to beat Rihanna. And when you think about it, this is where negative publicity turns into good publicity.

Despite the many negative headlines in recent months about Rihanna and Chris Brown, Rihanna has managed to remain in the news on a weekly basis. Whether it was about getting back together with Chris Brown, singing with Chris Brown, unveiling her new tattoo, appearing in Vogue or releasing cover art and upcoming tracks, Rihanna has consistently been in the public eye. And whether you agree or disagree, it’ll likely translate into huge album sales and her first #1 album.

Although Kid Rock and Phil Phillips have loyal followings, they haven’t had the same type of media attention as Rihanna.

And just this week, the Rihanna related attention continued.

Rihanna recently completed her 777 Tour after playing seven concerts in seven cities in seven days. It was an impressive feat and a great marketing strategy. Rihanna invited over a hundred journalists to join her on a private plane to document the experience. This week, a video surfaced that saw one guy streak naked through the plane as all of the cameras captured the antics.

Like I said, Rihanna’s been making headlines on a daily and weekly basis for months.

Do you think Rihanna will hit #1 with Unapologetic?
