Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. series got a strong vote of confidence on Thursday at the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour in Los Angeles.

At the most recent TCA event in L.A., ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee revealed that he expects Joss Whedon’s upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series to get an order by the network.

Following the success of The Avengers last year, Lee spoke with reporters on Thursday and shed light on the progress of Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. based on characters from Marvel Comics.

“We fast-tracked that and we’ll see it a lot earlier than the others,” said the ABC president. “We’re very hopeful that’s going to go to series.”

Back in August, actor Clark Gregg was the first cast member confirmed for the S.H.I.E.L.D TV series in the role of Agent Coulson from The Avengers. Later casting on S.H.I.E.L.D. included the additions of Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Chloe Bennet as Skye, and Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Gemma Simmons.

Although there’s been no word on the inclusion of Nick Fury in the S.H.I.E.L.D. series on ABC, Samuel L. Jackson, who played Fury in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, has already expressed interest in returning to the role.

In terms of development, Paul Lee gave further insight into the dynamic behind the upcoming Marvel series. “Joss has great relationships around it,” Lee added. “There’s a lot of real funny male-female relationships and flirtations … there’s a lot of action to it.”

Joss Whedon will direct the pilot and co-write the first S.H.I.E.L.D. script with brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. S.H.I.E.L.D will begin filming in January 2013 is slated for the Fall TV season.
