The new horror film Mama with Jessica Chastain won the weekend box office with an estimated $28.1 million to beat Zero Dark Thirty at $17.6 million.

The Guillermo del Toro produced Mama, starring recent Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain, won the weekend box office over Zero Dark Thirty, which also stars Chastain, and David O Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook at $11 million.

Although Mama may have received a bit of a boost from Zero Dark Thirty though Jessica Chastain’s recent Golden Globe win and Best Actress Oscar nomination, the low budget horror film earned $18 million over the weekend after starting Friday with $10 million in ticket sales. Still, Jessica Chastain dominated this weekend’s box office with the first and second place movies.

Following the recent January win by Texas Chainsaw 3D, Mama proved that fans love horror movies as much as the higher profile Oscar contenders.

The biggest surprise this weekend, however, was the box office bomb of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s action film, The Last Stand, which finished with a disappointing $6 million. The Last Stand started the weekend with only $2 million in sales to sputter to the finish line in 10th place with nothing left in the cinematic tank.

Despite a favorable audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes of 73%, The Last Stand failed to capture the attention of moviegoers who obviously chose entertaining scares over the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, that could change in 2014 when Schwarzenegger returns to the role of Conan the Barbarian in The Legend of Conan.

Behind Mama, Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings Playbook at the weekend box office, Gangster Squad finished fourth with $9.1 million in front of the thriller Broken City at $9 million.
