The Discovery Channel announces the 13th season of “Deadliest Catch” premieres April 11. For 12 years, we’ve watched the veteran captains and their crews set out of Dutch Harbor, Alaska and they thought they’d seen it all. Until drastic temperature spikes in the Bering Sea, crab pots are coming up empty and pushing the fleet into unchartered territory. The rise is temperature forces crab out to deeper, and cooler water.
“The fleet is going to need to go further and deeper,” said Captain Sig Hansen of the F/V Northwestern. “Nobody is going to take away a fishermen’s way of life. I can guarantee you that this fleet will not quit… But we’re always fearful that this will be our last year,” according to the Discovery press release. “Last year, Sig endured one of the most difficult seasons of his career, narrowly surviving a major heart attack known as a widow maker. Sig faces a true crossroads in his life, and wonders just how much this profession is worth, especially after his wife June delivers the incredible news that he’s now a grandfather.”
The Time Bandit’s Captain Johnathan Hillstrand is also looking at retirement from the crab fleet after 37 years. He sets out for one of the toughest seasons ever, and it’s questionable if he’ll be able to retire in the way he dreamed.
Captain Keith Colburn returns in the wheelhouse of Wizard, and Captain Wild Bill returns after acquiring a new fishing vessel Summer Bay. Captain Jake Anderson is also back on Saga for another season on the Bering Sea.
Season 13 of “Deadliest Catch” premieres on Tuesday, April 11th at 9 pm ET on Discovery Channel.
