Fergie found herself amid some controversy after the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, and the singer has issued a formal apology for her divisive performance.
“I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the National Anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA,” Fergie tells TMZ, “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.”
She took center stage at the Staples Center with a slowed-down jazzy rendition of the National Anthem. A spectator at the All-Star Game told People, “It actually didn’t sound so bad at first. Everyone was just trying to figure out what was going on…Then she started doing all those ranged and it just went downhill.”
