Producers of the Netflix drama “The Crown” have apologized to actors Claire Foy and Matt Smith. Last week a producer disclosed that Foy was paid less than Smith for their roles on the award winning drama series. Foy starred as Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and Smith played Prince Philip. Left Bank Pictures issued a statement Tuesday saying that the actors, “are not aware of who gets what and cannot be held personally responsible for the pay of their colleagues.
The production company apologized that Foy and Smith found themselves in the center of a media storm through no fault of their own.
Since news broke of the gender pay gap, a petition has emerged urging Smith to donate part of his salary to “Time’s Up.”
