Swedish DJ and producer Avicii, born Tim Bergling, died Friday in Muscat, Oman. He was 28 years old.
A rep for the artist told PEOPLE, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii. He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th.
In early 2016, Avicii announced he was retiring from touring with a letter to his fans. The DJ had suffered from health issues for several years, including acute pancreatitis. As a result, he had his gallbladder and appendix removed 4 years ago.
Avicii’s first hit, “Levels” made him an instant success in 2011. Followed by “Wake Me Up” the peaked at #4 on the Hot 100.
