“American Idol” has been renewed for a 17th season, its second season on ABC after moving over from FOX. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the renewal includes deals for the current judges and host, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Ryan Seacrest.
While the 16th season pulled in fewer viewers compared to its run on FOX, the series secured an average 2.1 rating among adults ages 18 to 49 for Sunday shows and a 1.9 rating for its Monday shows. And with a hefty payroll for its judges and host – like $25 million for Katy Perry, profits may be slim.
ABC’s debut season of “American Idol” continues to broadcast live shows on Sundays until its two-night finale on Monday, May 21.
