The Top 25 Moments of 2007
by Reg Seeton
20. The iPhone Cometh
This would have been higher on our list, but we're guessing by now
the newly launched iPhone is already obsolete. In June of 2007, for
those who just had to have the latest gadget to come down the pipe,
thousands of people lined up to buy Apple's interactive phone, PC, all-in-one
multimedia center with a price tag of nearly $800, selling 270,000
units in the first two days of sales. After pricing out a huge sector of
the market, the first generation iPhone still became a top-selling
phenomenon in 2007 and the largest electronics launch in history. For
those who still can't figure out how to watch movies on their iPhone,
don't worry; the second generation iPhone is due out in 2008.
19. Kid Rock vs Tommy Lee
You can't go a year without some type of celebrity scuffle and this
year it was Kid Rock and Tommy Lee at the 2007 Video Music Awards in
Las Vegas back in September. Although the two love-struck rockers were
caught between Pamela Anderson and seemingly MTV, the presence of Lee,
Rock, and Anderson at the awards was a powderkeg waiting to explode.
Rock clocked Lee in the kisser when he returned from the can to find Lee
sitting too close for comfort. The big loser in the fight was poor Alicia
Keyes who was simply trying to get through her performance on stage
while Rock and Lee scuffled below. This all came after an earlier
conforntation in 2007 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas where
Rock confronted Lee after Anderson allegedly met up with her former
husband behind Rock's back. Kid Rock went on Larry King Live later in the
year to explain the situation and ask the appropriate question of why all
three were in the same room at the VMA's, and what was MTV thinking?
[*Honorable mention goes out to Danny Bonaduce for his slam dunk of
Johnny Fairplay at this year's Reality TV awards]
18. Reunions: The Police, Van Halen, and Led Zeppelin
The only thing we can say is... It's about time fellas.
Cha-Ching!
17. Battlestar Galactica to End its Run
It seems like only yesterday when everyone was up in arms over what
the new Battlestar Galactica would become. What do you mean
Starbuck's a chick? Well, after four amazing seasons on SCI FI it all
came to an end in 2007, sort of, when creator Ronald D. Moore and producers decided
to pack up shop and go out on a high note. Although we'll miss the
adventures of the Galactica and its crew when it finally ends its run in 2008 (especially Tricia Helfer), the
series will go down as four of the best years in television history.
Not since the famous question of "Who shot J.R.?" have we been treated to
such a cool and consistent cliffhanger as "Who's a Cylon?" Still, we're thinking the decision to shut down Galactica in 2007 in the show's prime was probably a good move.
16. Rosie vs Trump vs The View
Whether you think it's a worthy headline or not, the feud between
Rosie O'Donnell and Donald Trump took up a lot of "hot air" time in 2007.
Just when you thought it was all done and over with, one of the two
kept the fires buring in the media. The war of words between O'Donnell
and Trump actually began in December of 2006 when O'Donnell made fun of
Trump on The View, but the spat spilled over into 2007 when the two
kept taking shots at each other in the media, Rosie mostly via her blog
and Trump on a variety of talk shows when asked for comment. Once the
chatter spilled over to The View and co-host/creator Barbara Walters,
the Trump feud became both good and bad publicity for the show. Rosie
decided to leave The View three weeks early in April shortly after a
clash over the Iraq War with co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck.
15. Isaiah Washington Leaves Grey's Anatomy
After a controversial incident on the set of Grey's
Anatomy in 2006 turned public, actor Isaiah Washington found himself in hot
water for using a homophobic slur against fellow actor TR Knight.
Although Washington tried to make amends for his remarks by filming a public
service announcement and entering into rehab to save his job, it was
all for not as ABC failed to renew his contract, which sent Washington
packing from one of the highest rated shows on television. Despite what
seemed to be a career killer, Isaiah Washington returned to the
airwaves on the reimagined Bionic Woman, which failed to catch on with
fans.
14. Michael Vick in the Dog House
If 2007 proved anything, it reinforced the fact that actors and
musicians don't have a momnopoly on the "celebrity arrest" headlines. In
one of the biggest falls from grace the NFL has ever seen, in July 2007
Atlanta Falcons' star quarterback Michael Vick was charged with
offenses related to dogfighting. Dogfighting? WTF? Is this 2007 or 1877?
Just when you thought Vick might be charged with something like
concealing a controlled substance in a water bottle or something similar, he's
hit with dogfighting charges... and they're true, too. Here's a tip
for all of you aspiring pro atheletes... when you hit the big time,
you've won the lottery. You don't NEED a hobby until you retire from the
league, especially something stupid like cockfighting, mudwrestling,
dogfighting, celebrity poker, or whatever. Whatever you want to do after
you retire to the life of a multi-millionaire at age 30, you're on your
own.
13. Knocked Up
After suffering through a tremendously dull void in the world of
good cinematic comedies, 2007 saw Judd Apatow ride down from the Hollywood
hills wearing a white hat to give fans a new generation of hilarious
films on the heels of The 40 Year Old Virgin. After delivering
one of the best comedies of 2006, Apatow followed up in 2007 with
Knocked Up, about a one-night stand gone horribly awary. The genius of
Knocked Up was derived from the familiar "What if?" question a
lot of us have asked at one point or another after a few beers and a
wild night out on the town. Given the success of Knocked Up, 2007
turned Seth Rogen into an unlikely but bonafide star.
