An American Gladiators Smackdown with Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali

by Troy Rogers

What are you going to do when NBC and American Gladiators run wild in January? When you look back at the original American Gladiators that aired in the late 1980s/early 1990s, the David versus Goliath athletic competition was somewhat of a prototype for the wave of reality based shows to follow in the next decade. Now, after an 11-year absence from the airwaves, American Gladiators returns to network TV in a new, imporved, and revived version of the popular original.

Hogan on the new competitors in American Gladiators as compared to wrestlers:

"A lot of people don’t consider wrestlers real athletes, you know, and we’ve had people like Bill Kazmaier and John Matuszak, and Lyle Alzado, Kevin Green - and everybody else. Dennis Rodman and Karl Malone, all try to get in the wrestling business. And... for some reason or not, decided that it was a little too hard or too many injuries, or it wasn’t for them. So I don’t know what you would classify as a real athlete just because of the genre that you’re in.

"But these - the wrestlers that I’ve been with are some of the best athletes in the world. Now if we want to parallel that with these American Gladiators, some of these guys have been athletes and on a professional level. Some of these people could be competitive right now on a professional level. And I just look at the physicalities and the talent, you know, and the god-given ability they have and these are the best of the best. These guys are really, really good and it makes for a great playing field because of the contestants that have to go up against these athletes or these gladiators, basically you had to jump through hoops and get to the top of the barrel because they’ve had thousands and thousands of people want to be contestants on American Gladiators to win the prize money, to win the car or whatever motivation they have.

"But we’re operating a really raised bar level here as far as these athletes. So I consider in my own personal opinion, these gladiators really top notch athletes. Now just because they’re wearing red, white and blue, and the show is entertainment, there still is this huge, huge competitive playing field that they’re playing on. So I think people are not only going to enjoy it, but once they see some of the events and some of the things that go on, they’re going to respect not only the gladiators but the competitors."

Ali on the status of her boxing career:

"I’m not retired from boxing and I’m not active right now. But I’m the champ until one of two thing happens - either I have to give up my titles or they get taken away because I haven’t defended them, or I retire from boxing or somebody beats me. So, you know, at this time, yeah, I’m still the champ."

Ali on what she thought of the recent Floyd Mayweather fight with Ricky Hatton:

"I was actually working that day and I got home to see the fifth round on. And I thought Ricky Hatton was doing a really good - if anyone could beat him, I thought Ricky Hatton had a good chance... But I knew right when his corner - I heard his corner tell him just go in there, forget defense, just go crazy. You know what I mean? I said he’s going to run into something and that’s exactly what happened... You can’t do that with a guy like Floyd because he sees everything. He sees every mistake... But I think it was a tough fight for Floyd, you know. And I know he was very happy when it was over because I’ve been in fights like that."

Laila Ali on her boxing skills as compared to her father's:

"The difference between my dad - I definitely - I mean, I think that my performance speaks for itself as far as boxing is concerned. But my father is more of a showman than I am, definitely. I mean, he lives to make people - to put on a performance and make people laugh. And, you know, I don’t really do... If I make you laugh it wasn’t on purpose. I wasn’t trying to. You know what I mean?"
