THE DEADBOLT: Did you learn anything about crocs after making the film?
FLORES: I didn’t know what their nests looked like, because in the script it said there was a nest. I was just imagining that it was like a bird nest or a hole in the mud. But they do build nests like a gigantic house. It’s like an igloo made out of twigs. I have no idea how they make it, so we just built a giant twig-based igloo [laughs].
THE DEADBOLT: Given how the second movie wrapped up, what’s the status on another sequel?
FLORES: You can’t actually do a creature movie without implying that there’s going to be a sequel. It’s like one of the main rules of doing these movies, but I have no idea what’s going on with the sequel. I’m sure we’ll make one somewhere along the line. The last time they talked to me, "Hey, we have a movie for you. Here’s the script; you’re on a plane in 24 hours."
THE DEADBOLT: So what was it like to work with Cloris Leachman?
FLORES: She was awesome. She’s a little bit of a loon, though. I don’t know if she just stays in character or what, but she would show up on set and she was crazy all of the time. She was always doing weird stuff all of the time and I was just hoping it was something in her character. I mean, she was a method actor.
THE DEADBOLT: Did you watch Primeval before starting on Lake Placid 2?
FLORES: No, is it any good?
THE DEADBOLT: Your croc was better.
FLORES: A lot of people said the same thing when I did Boa vs. Python versus Anaconda. It was like, "Okay, they got $40 million and I’ve got $2 million to make a movie and they still fail on so many levels." Typically what I felt like with Anaconda was that movie was trying to take itself too seriously. I don’t think the people who are into this genre really care about all of this dramatic stuff. Sometimes it just has nothing to do with the movie they came to watch.
THE DEADBOLT: Now that Lake Placid 2 has come and gone, what’s the status of your Captain Drake project?
FLORES: I’m cutting that right now. It’s up and moving along and I think it’s going to be pretty good. I’m really proud of it so far. It’s going to be a fun adventure movie. Adrian Paul is the lead in the movie and he’s a really good actor. He really brought a lot in researching Sir Francis Drake, because I knew very little about him. You should read about him because there’s about a million movies you could do about this guy and some of the sh*t he pulled off. It’s like an unbelievable record this guy was doing and he was constantly getting away with stuff. I was reading and thought, "Wow, this guy is larger than life." I didn’t think anyone could come in here and pull the character off, but he did a really good job. He said he probably did more research on Sir Francis Drake than I did.
