THE DEADBOLT: Well, how do you think Enrique Morales from Oz would’ve gotten along with Dexter?
ZAYAS: I don’t know, that’s an interesting question. No one has ever asked me that before. I’m sure Enrique Morales has certain qualities that probably would’ve agreed with Dexter, but Enrique Morales also has qualities that would’ve been in total contradiction to the way Dexter thinks, the way his kind of warped morality would think. So I don’t know. I think they might have clashed. They might have gotten along, but there might have been some clashes along the way. You never know.
THE DEADBOLT: What was it like having Keith Carradine join the cast in season two?
ZAYAS: He was great, professional, and he was a great guy to work with. He had a real dignity about him when he did his scenes, and it was a really good experience to work with him.
THE DEADBOLT: I’ve also heard that Jimmy Smits is joining the show this season.
ZAYAS: Yes, he is, and I’m excited about that. I worked with Jimmy on Broadway. He’s a great example of someone of his status and how he conducts himself. He’s a gentleman, he’s a professional, and he works hard. I experienced that first hand when I worked with him and I’m very excited that he’s coming onboard this year.
THE DEADBOLT: Can you tell us about any other additions or guest stars?
ZAYAS: I don’t. I haven’t even started shooting yet. I just know about Jimmy because I read it and he was at the read-through. But that’s the only person that I know about.
THE DEADBOLT: What are your thoughts on the controversy surrounding Dexter when it got picked up for rebroadcast by CBS earlier in the year?
ZAYAS: Well, again this is a show about an individual with different qualities that happens to be a serial killer - happens to have a sickness. And everybody is entitled to their opinion. Hopefully they’re not letting their 6 year-old stay up and watch it on CBS. Hopefully they’re not letting their 6 year-old stay up and watch 24 either. There’s a lot of violence in that as well. There’s a lot of violence in a lot of shows and I think they’re all quality shows. They have something to bring and they’re all interesting and, unfortunately, violence is a part of our society, which has to be dealt with. I just don’t think protesting a show, especially a quality show that’s interesting like Dexter, is fair. Then again, everybody is entitled to their opinion.
THE DEADBOLT: Not too long ago I heard that Marc Ecko's company is developing a Dexter video geame. Have you been contacted to do voice work yet?
ZAYAS: A video game? This is the first I’ve heard of it. No one has contacted me about voice work. I’ll have to look into this and ask around.
THE DEADBOLT: I'm trying to picture what a pixilated Angel would look like.
ZAYAS: Well, I just picked up a Mad Magazine a while ago and it had a piece on the show and we were all caricatures of ourselves in it. You know, how Mad parodies TV shows. I thought it was funny. And hey, once you’re in Mad Magazine, you’ve made it.[ laughs]
THE DEADBOLT: That, and having an action figure.
ZAYAS: Oh yeah, that too.
