Jason Lee Chases Chipmunks, iPods, and the Holidays

by Jordan Riefe

Who can forget Jason Lee in the role of Brodie in Mallrats? What about Lee as the demon Azrael in Dogma? How about Lee’s amazing role as Stillwater frontman Jeff Bebe in Almost Famous? In recent years Jason Lee has found success on the small-screen in the role of quirky-but-lovable slacker Earl on the hit series My Name is Earl. Now Jason Lee is stepping outside of his usual box to play the classic holiday character Dave Seville in the big screen version of Alvin and the Chipmunks, which hits theaters on December 14.

Jason Lee on whether he’s seen or played the new Guitar Hero game:

"No, is it any good? I find that video games occupy a lot of time and it scares me. If I got locked into something that I was really into, I could see myself doing it for hours on end and I don’t think I would do that. I’m online, you know, E-bay, checking - I buy a lot of cameras on E-bay."

Lee on the music he likes:

"I like everything from classical to Miles Davis to Radiohead, folk music, old country music, everything. I have close to 10,000 songs on my i-Pod now and I’ve been slowly working on that collection. It’s time consuming, but I want to fill up my library. I have a lot of records, too, and I’ll never have as many records as songs on my computer but I have probably 1500 records now. A lot of it’s jazz, classical, and rare stuff. I listen to records more than anything, because they sound better than any digital source. So, I’m big into music."

On whether Earl will get out of jail on My Name is Earl:

"We did 13 episodes; we were meant to do 26. So we were able to film some good stuff, some important stuff, so even if we don’t come back this season it’s still going to resolve some things, which is good because we had two written before the strike."

Jason Lee on what he likes about the holidays:

"I enjoy the shopping and buying presents for my son. I like it. I like having a fire in the fireplace, relaxing, eating a lot of food, and opening gifts. It’s a nice time. I like the weather like this. I rode my motorcycle up here last night from L.A., up the coast, it got a little bit cold, but it kind of refreshing. I’d just flown in from New York, so I was on the plane for six hours, so to be on my motorcycle driving along the ocean at night - I got here at midnight - it kind of woke me up. But I’m one for this kind of weather. East coast is maybe a bit too cold, because I’m from California but I like this kind of fresh weather."
