X-Files Sequel Sets Date
November 2, 2007

Mulder and Scully fans rejoice - the long-anticipated sequel to The X-Files has set a date and it's sooner than you think, June 25th, 2008. That's right, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will return to reprise the roles that made them famous in a follow-up that will start production as early as December 10th. The film doesn't have a title yet but has to be one of the biggest projects of the summer of 2008, a season that will already see sequels to Indiana Jones and Batman Begins. Indy, the Joker, Scully - sounds like a summer movie season to us.

What do we know about The X-Files 2? Nothing. Of course. Everyone is staying as secret as possible with E! saying that all that is really known is that it's a supernatural thriller. Oh yea. Interestingly however, creator Chris Carter has implied that the film, which he wrote and will direct, will be a stand-alone story. So does that mean no mention of Mulder's sister or the Cigarette Smoking Man? Could this be an X-Files movie more like the stand-alone episodes of the show like "Home" or "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose." That might actually be pretty cool.

Gillian Anderson told Empire last year that Chris Carter was going to make the film something more like a really scary horror flick, adding more fuel to the theory that all the conspiracy issues may be left out. At the TCA tour in July, David Duchovny admitted that he had received the script, which has been in development for the better part of the last decade. The first X-Files movie opened with over $30 million and went on to make almost $200 million worldwide. The biggest question for most fans has to be what took so long? (It's contract issues between Carter and Fox, but that's boring stuff, so we won't get into it.) For now, just mark your calendars for June 25th, 2008 for The X-Files 2. The truth is still out there. Who knew?
