If you're attracted to the quirkier fare at the multiplex and tired of the cookie cutter films and the summer of sequels, we've got an original DVD for you. The tragically underrated Angel-A, the film legendary writer/director Luc Besson claims will be his last behind-the-camera, will undeniably find a cult audience on DVD. It's just that kind of film. Visually stunning, unabashedly romantic, and featuring a stunning blonde who may be able to sprout angel's wings, Angel-A should have found a bigger audience in theaters but that's the great thing about DVD. Just like the lead character in Angel-A, there's always a second chance.
Angel-A is a sexy, thrilling drama about how love can heal all wounds. Andre (Jamel Debbouze) is a gambler who has dug himself into a hole so deep that the only way out that he can find is suicide. He climbs on to a Parisian bridge and looks over to find Angela (Rie Rasmussen), a gorgeous woman about to jump herself. Angela jumps, Andre saves her, and then the film gets really interesting. Maybe Angela seems heavenly for a reason. Part It's a Wonderful Life, part Wings of Desire, and part something purely from the mind who made Leon: The Professional and The Fifth Element, Angel-A may not be perfect but it's unlike anything else released this year. That alone makes it worth checking out. Completely original and with stunning visual delights, Angel-A is one of those movies that's either going to enchant you or drive you to despise it. Either way, you should see it and decide for yourself.
Sony does a few wonderful things with the Angel-A home treatment, starting with a gorgeous front cover and near-perfect video and audio transfers. Angel-A is one of the best looking films of the year and it's nice to see it get such a well-deserved crystal clear transfer on DVD. It would have been nice if they could have cobbled together a few more special features like an audio commentary track, but the only extra that is included - "The Making of Angel-A" - is a well-made featurette that runs almost half an hour. It's really about all you need for a film that basically speaks for itself. What it says to you might drive you crazy or might make you fall in love with Angel-A. Take a listen.
