Amy Winehouse Booed in Birmingham, Lashes Out at Fans
November 15, 2007
The comeback of singer Amy Winehouse took a turn for the worse Wednesday night in Birmingham, England after being booed off the stage. Winehouse began her U.K. tour by cutting short her set after sluggishly meandering through her lyrics, slurring her words, insulting fans, and exiting the stage in the middle of a song. As Amy Winehouse disappeared off stage, the "Wake Up Alone" singer received a continuous barrage of displeasure as the crowd booed Winehouse both in mid-song and as she left the stage. Only a few hours after catching up with her newly incarcerated husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, for the first time since he was sent to prison this week, Winehouse was expected to get back on her feet after a year of highs and lows.
According to E Online, the sold-out Amy Winehouse show in Birmingham turned ugly when Winehouse retaliated after fans booed her in mid-song, a tune that Winehouse dedicated to her husband. As reported, Amy Winehouse struck back at the crowd, "To them people booing, wait til my husband gets out of incarceration... And I mean that." Although it would be an interesting sight to see the 25 year old Fielder-Civil fend off a few thousand angry Amy Winehouse fans, Wednesday night concert-goers can rest easy for now since Winehouse's husband won't be able to to do battle any time soon. Fielder-Civil, who recently received a visit from drug-dogged Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty, was recently sentenced to prison on charges of "grievous bodily harm and attempting to pervert the course of justice."
Throughout the show, Amy Winehouse fought back tears, obviously deeply affected by both her visit to prison and the crowd's displeasure. As The Times Online reports, despite the "shambolic" Winehouse debacle in Birmingham, Amy Winehouse will continue on with her 17 night tour against the wishes of her fans. While some Amy Winehouse fans demanded their money back, one disappointed fan named Annie voiced her displeasure on The Times Online website, posting, "I could not understand a word she was slurring, she could barely stand up, and it was embarrassing for the band who were desperately trying to keep the show going."
Has the short career of Amy Winehouse gone down in a glorious ball of flames like a fiery meteor descending from the heavens?
Well, as the Times Online reveals, a spokesperson for Amy Winehouse stated that the singer is detrmined to soldier on despite the "shambolic" display in Birmingham, "She told her management that she wants to carry on with the tour. If anyone told her to stop and rest, it would only make her more determined to do it." On Friday, Winehouse is scheduled to take to the stage in Glasgow, which one way or another is sure to make headlines.
Amy Winehouse recently suffered a drug induced siezure, a result of her living-on-the-edge lifestyle. Despite her personal battles, Winehouse still has the best selling album of the year in Britain after her internationally recognized Back to Black was picked up by 1.2 million Brits.
