Tim Burton goes 3-D
November 16, 2007

Director Tim Burton has seen his fair share of success, with films like Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish and Corpse Bride all achieving big levels of success, both critically and at the box office. It comes as little surprise that Disney would sign Tim Burton to direct a pair of films for the studio, but both Alice in Wonderland and Frankenweenie won't fall into the live-aciton realm - both movies will be shot in 3-D.

First up for the acclaimed director will be Alice in Wonderland, which will be shot using the same performance-capture technology which is currently being demonstrated on the big screen in Beowulf. According to IGN, the script for Alice in Wonderland "revolves around a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole and finds a secret world of bizarre creatures and monsters, including talking playing cards and walking fish." The script has been written by Linda Woolverton, a mainstay for Disney after she wrote the scripts for The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. Alice seems to line itself up perfectly with Burton, who has demonstrated his flare for the fantastical in several other pictures.

After work is completed on Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton will go on to remake the 1984 short, Frankenweenie. Frankenweenie will center on a pet dog who is brought back to life by his owner, and should be an easy one for Tim Burton to get to the heart of - Burton directed the original short film more than 20 years ago. For the remake, Burton will turn the story into a feature-length film, which is expected to be shot entirely using stop-motion animation. The final product will be shown in 3-D, just like Alice in Wonderland.

News of Tim Burton's upcoming projects comes as the director finishes up work on Sweeney Todd, which stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen. As for a schedule for Alice in Wonderland, the project is set to start off early in 2008, with a wrap date tentatively slated for May 2008.
