Led Zeppelin to Launch 2008 World Tour?
November 21, 2007

If it's true, it will be the hottest ticket of the year, if not the decade. Led Zeppelin are rumored to be set to tour in the new year, as Ian Astbury, the frontman from The Cult, announced that they would be the support band for the world tour during a Cincinnati, Ohio concert.

Again, if it's true that Led Zeppelin are planning a world tour with The Cult as their support band, then it's possible that the biggest secret in rock music for this decade was spilled by Ian Astbury at a club show in Ohio. MTV quoted Astbury, who midway during their Saturday night gig that, "We'll be back next year," adding, "Because we're opening for a band you may have heard of ... the name starts with an 'L' and has a 'Z' in it." When the rock fans guessed Led Zeppelin, Astbury nodded and then began to rock out once more.

When asked for some kind of confirmation about what Ian Astbury had said, spokespersons for both The Cult and Led Zeppelin denied comment on the situation. The Led Zeppelin rep did state that there was no decision made on any sort of Led Zeppelin reunion tour, and that the band is currently focusing on the Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert in London, which is slated for December 10. When the one-off concert was announced, Robert Plant insisted that a tour was not in the cards, and that John Bohnam's son, Jason Bonham, would fill in on drums for this one show only.

However, after the reunion concert was announced, Jimmy Page offered fans some hope that such a tour could be in the cards. StarPulse News quoted Jimmy Page, when he recently noted that, "It's a bit silly (not to tour) because there is such massive demand. It's a bit selfish to do just one show. If that's it, we probably shouldn't have taken the genie out of the bottle." On top of that, Billboard.com is reporting that several U.S. venues have been approached about staging a Led Zeppelin tour date, complete with the The Cult opening.

For now, it remains anyone's guess as to if Ian Astbury was telling the truth or just hyping his band. Either way, it seems more than possible that Led Zeppelin could be doing a reunion tour in the new year, and it could easily be the highest-grossing tour of all time.
