Birdman Charged With Pot Possession
November 29, 2007
The rapper Birdman, known by the law as Bryan Williams (also called "Baby" by some) was released on bond yesterday after being charged with posession of marijuana after he was pulled over on Tuesday night. Birdman, who is 38, allegedly had more than a half-ounce of marijuana on him and posted a $1,500 bond, according to the AP. On Tuesday night, 16 people were pulled over in an RV for making an improper lane change and that's when the police discovered the drugs. The AP reports that police say they stopped the RV after it made a lane change that forced a tractor-trailer into the emergency lane on Interstate 81 in Tennesee.
According to the AP, police smelled marijuana inside the rented RV after it was pulled over and that they found about a pound of pot in a trash can in the kitchenette of the vehicle. All of the members of the vehicle, which means the 15 people not named Birdman, were charged with possession and released from the Kingsport, TN Police Department. All were free on bond on Wednesday.
Birdman spoke to MTV News on Wednesday and defended himself, saying he had no idea what was going on and that they did not have a pound of weed on that RV. He tells them, "We was on the bus. I was asleep in the back. Why they pulled us over, I don't know. The people are making the situation out worse than what it is. We got arrested for a misdemeanor amount of [marijuana] - we didn't have no pound. The police just found something minor in a garbage can the dog sniffed. We all got out on bond."
Some reports have also indicated that Birdman was recently married, but the rapper denies it saying that the girl in question was a friend of one of the guys they were traveling with. He tells MTV, "I'm not married. Never! Been! Married! Plus, that girl was 18! I don't get down like that! Plus, if I was married, why would I keep it a secret?"
Birdman is the co-founder of Cash Money Records, a subsidiary of Universal Records. His new recording, 5 Star G, hits on December 11th and he's due back in court on March 18th, which could hurt touring plans, but Birdman is optimistic. He tells MTV, "Hopefully all the charges will be dropped by then, and we won't have to go to court. But we good. Everybody is fine."
