Britney Spears Skips Deposition
December 12, 2007
Trying to add to the list of her really bad decisions in 2007, Britney Spears decided to skip out on a court-ordered deposition today because she wasn't feeling well. BritBrit had been ordered by the court to attend a deposition this morning in her ongoing custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline. The news and paparazzi were even there waiting for the queen of the tabloids, who was supposed to arrived at the office of attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan at around 10am. An hour later, Kaplan, who is the attorney for K-Fed, came out and told the gathered masses that Ms. Spears would not be coming because she didn't feel well.
Kaplan told the press, as quoted by the AP, "She's going to show at a later date but we didn't waive any rights to ask from certain relief from the court as a result of having a court-ordered deposition not attended." In other words, even if you're not feeling well, it's a good idea to show up when the court tells you to. Something that Britney Spears has already struggled with. She's not exactly punctual. Kaplan complained last month in court that Britney Spears was ducking out on her court-ordered drug tests, not answering the phone when the lab called to ask for a sample. The court ordered Britney to provide a reliable phone number, but it's unclear if that even worked.
For months now, since shortly after the two announced their divorce a year ago, Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have been fighting over the custody of 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James. Right now, K-Fed has custody of the two children because Britney Spears has denied court orders. The divorce for the two tabloid stars was finalized in July.
How serious is skipping on a court-ordered deposition? MSNBC reports that the attorney for Kevin Federline could actually seek an arrest warrant to force the pop princess to come to court, no matter how she feels. Access Hollywood reports that the decision whether or not to seek an arrest warrant will likely be K-Fed's. Ooooh.
Today was not going to be a pretty day for Britney Spears, as she was expected to be grilled about her parenting abilities, drug and alcohol abuse, and her inability to follow court orders by the attorneys and judge. A number of Britney's friends have already been deposed to the same end, including Alli Sims, manager Larry Rudolph, and ex-bodyguard Daimon Shippen.
