Formerly titled Rogue, War had a lot of hype behind it given the star power of both Jet Li and Jason Statham. How could you go wrong with an action movie with two of the coolest action stars since Schwarzenegger and Stallone? Well, whether War fell apart in the editing room or behind the camera, the film unfortunately sputtered without much fanfare or attention and faded away to DVD. It's not that War was an awful movie on the scale of Perfect Stranger or even older films like King Kong Lives, the fact is that there wasn't enough explosive engagement to live up to the hype. Sure there's a lot of decent action, gunfire, chases, and some of the coolest cars in the world (the amazing Spiker Spyder and a Ferarri F430 to name a few), but that's it. Statham is on a relentless hunt for a deadly assissin named Rogue (Jet Li), which is all you need to know, but you're left with a lot of unanswered questions after the action subsides. Answers that might have been foresaken for faster cuts and transitions. Although there's not a cohesive structure to who exactly gets killed when and why, there's not enough connective tissue to keep you hooked for an entire 103 minutes. Still, War looks good enough and features a few awesome chases that will get your attention at various points.

Aside from the great video transfer, the nine-part behind-the-scenes segment called "The Action of War" breaks down everything from the actors and script to the action sequences and the fact that the cars were so fast that they couldn't control them whiloe filming. There's a really cool car sequence of a Chevelle SS that didn't do what it was supposed to while filming under BC Place Stadium in vancouver, which still made it into the movie despite the mistake. If anything, "The Action of War" will definitely get you pumped to check out the movie. To be honest, you might want to watch this first. Oh yeah, and War features a pretty funny Gag Reel, but it's way too short. Honorable mention goes out to the audio-trivia-commentary track which features a soothing female Japanese voice and filmmakers as they dish anout the movie.

Although it's not the worst feature we've ever seen, we don't really need an in-depth segment on the musical score for an action movie starring Jet Li and Jason Statham. Yawn!

Sure War didn't live up to the hype in theaters, but there is enough on the DVD that adds to the experience. It's not one of the best DVDs on the market, but Lionsgate does give fans decent supplimental value for their money. If you're a fan of both Jet Li and jason Statham, you might be disappointed by the end result of the film but you'll have a better time with the DVD.
