NBC Close to Cancelling Golden Globe Telecast
January 7, 2008

The latest news surrounding the Golden Globe Awards shouldn't come as a shock to anyone given how the ongoing writers' strike has impacted the curenet state of film and television. After a series of intense meetings on Sunday night, it appears NBC is seriously considering pulling the plug on the Golden Globes broadcast.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is... "pushing NBC to pull the plug on the broadcast because that will prompt the Writers Guild of America to lift its pickets and enable stars to attend the January 13 event."

If you need further proof after Friday's recent announcement by the Screen Actors Guild that its members wouldn't cross picket lines to attend the event, in our recent conference call with Patricia Arquette, the Medium actress recently shared her thoughts on whether she'd attend this year's Golden Globes, ""It’s such a great honor and it’s a pinnacle in your career and a nice recognition from your industry, so I don’t want to poo-poo that. I don’t [take] that lightly. But it’s important to have moral convictions even when it’s inconvenient to do so. So I don’t feel like I could show up unless there’s some kind of agreement made with the writers. There are so many families suffering right now and the sooner both sides come to the table and come to a reasonable resolution, the better for everyone."

The Hollywood Reporter story goes on to reveal that NBC had been working through the weekend to hammer out some sort of middle ground, also contemplating a "scaled back" event or a postponement, but after talks failed to produce an agreement, NBC is now looking to be closer to pulling the awards broadcast.

Expect an official announcement to come down the pike later today.
