TBS' newest slogan is "Very Funny." That's a high bar for a sitcom to jump over. Heck, even some of the repeats of Family Guy on the network aren't "Very Funny." Some are just "Kinda Funny" but that probably doesn't sound as good as a slogan. Also "Kinda Funny" is the original and mostly improvised sitcom 10 Items or Less, the brainchild of improv actor and star John Lehr. Like a lot of improv shows, 10 Items can be wildly hit and miss with some jokes falling completely flat, but another hitting home before you have time to change the channel. It doesn't quite stand up to the best in the subgenre - probably still Curb Your Enthusiasm, although the last season of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia was fantastic - but it's also far from the worst. In the doldrums of a winter where the writers hold picket signs more often than pens, a light, enjoyable comedy like this one could be the perfect choice on a Tuesday night.

10 Items or Less is a show like Reno 911! or Curb, where most of the dialogue is improvised after the cast is given a basic plot setup, usually a totally ridiculous one that allows the talented ensemble to go crazy within its structure. Take for example the second season premiere, airing tomorrow night, in which our lovable cast of losers - a manager (Lehr) and his staff at the grocery store Greens and Grains - finds some hidden money in the store and decides to have a "dollar day" special complete with a booth full of swirling money. After learning that coins don't swirl that well, the gang finds themselves held at gunpoint as they learn the lesson that advertising that you have a lot of money in a store might be a red flag for someone looking to commit a crime.

If you've ever seen an improvised comedy show in person, you know that even the best troupes swing wildly from hilarious to just painful and 10 Items or Less is no different. When they're hitting, the show can be as funny as anything on the air right now, but there are also scenes in the first two episodes of this season that simply don't work and that would have been rewritten if the show had a normal format. Then again, at the rate things are going there might not be any writers on any shows. Maybe everything could follow the path of 10 Items or Less and go improvised. That could make for a really interesting fall schedule. Until then, check out 10 Items or Less on Tuesday nights on TBS and see if the show lives up to the network's slogan for yourself.
