We're not here to stereotype, but it's highly likely that if you're a fan of Family Guy that you're a part of that generation that was raised on the Holy Trilogy - A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. When it was announced that Seth MacFarlane and the team at Family Guy would stop just peppering in Star Wars references every other episode and actually do an entire parody of one of the most influential films of all time, fanboys nearly peed their Yoda Underoos in anticipation. The episode itself aired late last year and is now being released in two formats on DVD and it's simply a must-have for fans of either the Fox animated hit or the sci-fi classic. So, even if you're one of those rare birds that loves Family Guy but doesn't like Star Wars, or vice versa, this DVD has something for you.

First, let's talk to the Family Guy fan. A diehard like myself, who has seen every episode, most more than once, will openly admit that the series has been a little stale lately. Watch a few reruns on cable or pull out the old DVDs and compare it to what's being produced for Sunday nights and you'll see what I mean. The writers on Family Guy always come back guns blazing after a long hiatus, so maybe the strike might actually inject some life into the series before it develops more of the repetitive patterns that have marred a few seasons of The Simpsons. Having said that, Family Guy still knocks one out of the park every once in a while and Blue Harvest was an absolute blast. Just seeing Stewie as Darth Vader and Meg as the trash compactor monster are worth your time alone. It feels a little long (and this one's even longer with a couple minutes that didn't make it on Fox) - animated comedy always works better in 22 minute installments - but it's clearly made out of love for its subject matter and the adoration is infectious. After watching Blue Harvest, you'll want to pull out your copy of the Star Wars trilogy and cancel your plans. It will remind you so much about what you loved about those films and that's a great gift to fans of both Family Guy and Lucas' work.

Now, let's talk to the guy dressed like a Wookie. You must buy Blue Harvest for only one reason - "A Conversation with Star Wars Creator George Lucas." Seth MacFarlane and his team not only went to LucasFilm to get permission to do Blue Harvest but they also screened the final product for Sir George when it was done. And, as if that wasn't childhood dream-fulfilling enough, Lucas agreed to sit down with MacFarlane and do an interview. The resulting 12-minute conversation covers everything from if Lucas watches his old works, why he makes movies, what he wants to remembered for, and what films sparked his imagination as a kid like Star Wars did for so many of us. It's far too short, but it's one of the more refreshing and casual conversations with Lucas that's on DVD anywhere, making this a must-but for Star Wars fans.

The rest of the bonus features on Blue Harvest are a little hit and miss. The audio commentary is surprisingly dry - spending a lot of time talking about how they cut and used the actual music from Star Wars - and the animatic version is for fans only. The Family Guy Star Wars Clip Show is fun, if just to see how often the series has referenced the classic movie. A full-on parody was inevitable. And now that it's arrived, we can all rejoice and hope that Family Guy is on the air long enough that they can eventually get to Empire Strikes Back.
