Roger Avary Arrested for DUI
January 14, 2008
It almost feels like we need a special section for celebrity DUIs, but this one is particularly serious. The latest victim of drinking and driving is Roger Avary, the Oscar-winning writer of Pulp Fiction, who was arrested early yesterday morning after a horrible crash left his passenger dead. Early Sunday, Roger Avary was taken in on suspicion of manslaughter and felony drunk driving after he lost control of his car and crashed. Roger Avary is most known for co-writing Pulp Fiction with his buddy from the days he worked at a video store, Quentin Tarantino. According to E!, Avary was behind the wheel when he got into a horrible accident in Ojai, California, just after midnight.
Andreas Zini, a 34-year-old Italian man who was visiting the Avary family on a trip to the Southern California town, lost his life after being rushed to the Ventura County Medical Center. E! reports that the man died in surgery. Gretchen Avary, the wife of Roger Avary, is still in stable condition at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after she was thrown from the vehicle from the force of the crash. Roger Avary was booked at Ventura County Jail, paid $50,000 bail, and was released a few hours later.
E! reports that there are no comments from the camp of Roger Avary and no other news about the details of the crash, which didn't include any other cars. There's also no word exactly what Roger Avary and his passengers were doing that evening or if he submitted to a Breathalyzer test.
The 42-year-old Roger Avary wrote some dialogue for Reservoir Dogs and reportedly helped with True Romance, even though he was uncredited. He co-wrote Pulp Fiction and wrote Killing Zoe, The Rules of Attraction, Glitterati, Silent Hill, and Beowulf. IMDB reports that Roger Avary was working on Driver and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which he will also direct.
