Wouldn't it be wonderful if a movie that failed as miserably as Good Luck Chuck had a DVD that reflected the poor decisions made by the filmmakers? No offense to Dane Cook and Jessica Alba (okay, maybe some offense to the super-smug Cook), but, my opinion aside, Good Luck Chuck was a disaster. The film couldn't cross 3% on Rotten Tomatoes. 3%! It was one of the worst reviewed films of the year and the box office made it clear that paying audiences didn't feel that differently. You'd never know it from the DVD, which treats the film like it's the next comedy classic. Listen to five minutes of the commentary by Dane Cook, director Mark Helfrich, producer Mike Karz, and writer John Stolberg and you might think they were talking about Blazing Saddles. It may be difficult to dissect what went wrong with a movie like Good Luck Chuck, but a little humility one of these days would be nice.

So, what did go wrong with Good Luck Chuck? Mostly, the screenplay, which takes the basic structure of an awful romantic comedy that might have starred Matthew McConaughey and adds an exorbitant amount of raunchy jokes and nudity. Dane Cook plays Charlie Logan, a man who gets cursed at a young age and ends up being a good luck charm for all the women he dates. They dump Charlie and they marry the next guy they meet. After this fact gets spread around the blogosphere, our hero finds himself being screwed and left by dozens of women looking for true love with the next guy. When he falls for the woman of his dreams, Cam (Jessica Alba), he has to go to extremes to try and break the curse or lose the one he's truly meant for. Jessica Alba proves that she has the charm and timing to make a romantic comedy work but she's left stranded by a horrible screenplay and enough mugging from the over-acting Cook that might work when he does stand-up but just makes him look like a fool on the big screen.

Lionsgate has turned into one of the better DVD houses and they should be applauded, I suppose, for giving Good Luck Chuck, a film that could have been handed the bare bones treatment, a package full of bells and whistles. Or should that be boobs and asses? Good Luck Chuck practically screams nudity to the horny boys looking to add it to their collection (although don't get your hopes up for any Alba goodies). The film contains 35 minutes of alternate or deleted scenes that weren't seen in theaters and enough special features to call it a special edition. There's the aforementioned commentary track along with 4 featurettes, a gag reel, deleted and alternate scenes, and ad-libs from a few of the actors.

The most unusual special feature in a long time has to be "Sex Matrix". In the film, there's a scene where Charlie is working his way through the women looking to use him as a good luck charm and we see 16 scenes of sex on-screen at the same time. Now, you can watch them all separately and see Dane Cook pretend to screw a different gorgeous woman for five to ten seconds at a time. You'd have to be a pretty hardcore (no pun intended) Cook fan to enjoy that. Kind of like the movie itself.
