James Bond Plot and Name Revealed
January 24, 2008
The 22nd film featuring James Bond will be called Quantum of Solace. Yeah, we're not so sure about that either, but after the genius of Casino Royale, we'll cut them some slack. In the film, shooting soon and planned for a release by the end of the year, Daniel Craig will reprise his role as James Bond and see 007 out for revenge on a mission that takes the legendary hero to Austria, Italy, and South America. The plot and title were revealed by Reuters today.
As a part of the announcement, unveiled today at Pinewood studios near London. everyone involved raved about Daniel Craig, the newest James Bond, who turned Casino Royale into a massive worldwide hit. Veteran Bond producer Barbara Broccoli said, "We have talked about doing some more films with him and he seems very happy to do that. So we will do it one at a time."
Quantum of Solace is the first official Bond film not based on an Ian Fleming book but the title does come from a short story by the author. Co-producer Michael Watson said, "We thought it was an intriguing title and referenced what is happening to Bond and what happens in the film."
The cast of Quantum of Solace was announced last week with newcomer Olga Kurylenko (Hitman) playing Camille, the latest Bond girl. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly star Mathieu Amalric will play villain Dominic Greene, which Reuters describes as a member of a mysterious organization and a ruthless businessman looking to control natural resources.
Unlike a lot of Bond films, Quantum of Solace will actually reference the film before it, picking up right where Casino Royale ended and focusing on his search for more information about Eva Green's character, Vesper Lynd, and why she betrayed Bond. Kurylenko told reporters, "James Bond is after revenge, and Camille is after revenge...They have slightly different goals, but in the end they are going to have to collaborate."
The Guardian has already claimed that Quantum of Solace is the worst Bond title ever and Daniel Craig has already defended it, saying, "At the end of the last movie his heart's been broken and he doesn't have that quantum of solace, he doesn't have that ... closure on what happened in his life and he needs to find out. What is great about it is it also applies to something very important in the plot."
Title or not, what really matters to fans may be what Wilson said near the end, which is that Quantum of Solace will have twice as many action sequences as Casino Royale, which was praised for presenting a more realistic, less gadget-heavy Bond. Let's hope they keep the new Bond going.
