Jon Favreau Dishes on "Iron Man" and "Ultimate Avengers"

by Reg Seeton

Well, according to director Jon favreau, Iron Man is done. It's not like us comics-to-film geeks here at The Deadbolt need to find a way to get pumped for Favreau's upcoming live-action Iron Man. After checking out the trailer when it first hit the Internet, things looked more than promising seeing Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Tony Stark. In the last few days, the press train has been rolling full-steam-ahead in L.A. for a number of upcoming projects, including Vince Vaughn's Wild West Show, in which Favreau makes a brief appearance.

While at the press conference for Vaughn's Wild West Show, Jon Favreau gave journalists a super-quick but informative update on Iron Man and the latest goods on everything from the story and cast to the expectations of the fan base and whether or not he'd be directing, or would like to direct, the recently rumored live action version of the Ultimate Avengers.

The good thing about all of this, according to Favreau's recent words, is that it's looking like comic book geeks will apparently see a lot more live-action superhero films before studios begin to take on the bigger ensemble pieces.

Jon Favreau on filming Iron Man:

"We just locked picture on Iron Man. But locking is different on this type of movie because every day more shots come out of the oven and you cut them in. It’s a real treat for me because I’m used to only having dialogue, story, comedy, and characters to cut with. Every day it’s like Christmas morning. A new shot comes in and we cut it into the movie and you realize that these movies could survive without good actors and without good stories because the shots are so fun and compelling and exciting if they’re done well. The guys at ILM, you know they did Pirates and Transformers, so that stuff is spectacular."

Favreau on the story and the cast:

"The stuff between Robert [Downey Jr.] and Gwyneth [Paltrow] and Jeff Bridges is really great stuff. There was so much freedom in storytelling because they always knew it was going to be about Iron Man and the flying and I never got pressure on the scenes. So I had a tremendous amount of freedom to tell a story in a tone that I’m very comfortable with."

On what the fan base is looking for:

"In a way this was the most creative freedom I remember having on anything, and it works. It’s a very good movie. I think that people’s expectations - although it’s changing now - but with superhero movies they’re expecting an experience. They’re not expecting quality. They can have a good time without it being a great movie is what I’m trying to say. So if you could deliver a great movie on top of something that’s fun to watch, then I think you exceed expectations. And because of the caliber of actors that Marvel allowed me to work with and hire, it’s just been really a lot of fun."

Favreau on shooting comedies as compared to Iron Man:

"It’s a very long process. It will be two years of working on it by the time it comes out in May. So that’s the one thing compared to doing a comedy where you can knock one or two out a year, this is a big effort."

Jon Favreau on directing the Ultimate Avengers:

"I’d love to if the experience is as good as this. They still have to make a few more movies because Avengers has The Hulk in it and Thor and Captain America and Iron Man. So I think they want to, according to Kevin Feige (producer), get a chapter in each of the heroes before they start playing with the idea of combining them. I think it’s very smart that they’re thinking of cross pollinating between different characters like they’ve always done in the comic books. And because they control all of these different characters, there can be that free-wheeling interplay between the movies and characters that gives it that spontaneous feel in the books."
