Talking "Hottie" with Paris Hilton

by Jordan Riefe

Say what you want about Paris Hilton, but she's certainly resilient. After a tumultuous couple of years in the public eye, Hilton has put the past behind her and rebounded to resume her acting career, as she also continues to expand her own unique brand. After starring in The Simple Life with Nicole Richie, Hilton has gone on to appear in a variety of shows and films, including guest spots on The O.C., Veronica Mars and American Dreamz and larger roles in such films as the remake of House of Wax, Bottoms Up and the 2006 comedy Pledge This!.

With a role in Darren Lynn Bousman's soon-to-be-released Repo! The Genetic Opera on the horizon, Hilton also had time to star in Tom Putnam's January 8th released rom-com The Hottie and the Nottie, about a guy who moves to L.A. in search of love, but finds himself caught between two best friends.

The Deadbolt was on-hand in L.A. for The Hottie and the Nottie press day and here's what Miss Hilton had to say about her role in the movie, life in the public eye, and being taken seriously as an actress.

Paris Hilton on being happy and upbeat throughout the entire movie:

"It was so much fun on set. We all immediately bonded and became really close friends. We would hang out even when we weren’t working. I was really happy with everything."

Hilton on whether the idea for the movie was hers:

"Actually, the writer came to me with it and so he wrote this with me in mind. He said, 'There is no one else who could play the hottie the way you could play it.' And I read it. I just fell in love with it. It’s a really fun film, but it also has a really beautiful message. I just think it was a cute and fun love story."

On the scripts she was offered prior to this role:

"A variety of different scripts, different horror films, different comedies, but out of all the ones I read this was the one I liked the most."

Hilton on how she feels the industry perceives her and whether they take her seriously:

"I think a lot of people see me from the The Simple Life, I’ve been doing that show for five seasons and it’s a reality show. I play a character, though, so I’m basically acting in that, but maybe people think that is really how I am. It’s not, though. I’ve been working with Ivana Chubbuck, who is an incredible acting coach, and I worked very hard for this. Now they will take me seriously."

On working as a producer on the film:

"It’s a lot of work. You are basically working on and off camera. It was just such a fun project that I enjoyed every minute of it."

Hilton and what she looks for in a man:

"Someone who can make me laugh, someone who is sweet, fun to be around, and honest."

The qualities in a guy that turn her off:

"Just someone who if we are at dinner they are rude to a waiter or someone like that. I get angry. People who lie, or people who brag, just guys with bad attitudes."

Hilton on working with an acting coach, taking on more dramatic roles, and whether she wants to be taken more seriously:

"Yeah, definitely. I just did a movie with Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed all the Saw films, and Paul Sorvino plays my father, Sarah Brightman plays my nemesis. It’s a musical horror film, and I’m never blonde in the movie at all. I always have different hair, different eyes, you could never tell it’s me in every scene. That was fun and it was great to get a role like that. It’s called Repo! The Genetic Opera and it’s a musical horror film."

On whether she'd ever consider plastic surgery as she gets older:

"I don’t know. I’m really scared even of getting shots, so I don’t know."

Paris Hilton on what she needs to do to be taken more seriously as an actress:

"Just take on different roles and prove myself in that way. This was just a fun movie to do, it was a really sweet romantic comedy, and my next movie is completely different. Then I’m going to do a drama after it, so it’s just doing roles and doing a good job."

On recent movies that she would have liked to have been a part of that no one would have imagined for her:

"I loved the movie Juno, I thought that was really cute."

Hilton on her character in Repo! The Genetic Opera:

"I play Amber Sweet, she’s the daughter of the guy who owns the company, and she’s a little demented and crazy. She’s obsessed with plastic surgery, always changing the way she looks because she wants to get all this approval."
