The CW To Bring Back Six Shows
February 12, 2008

As the networks ponder what to do in the aftermath of the writer's strike and if they should bring back their series for limited runs or wait till the fall or go through the summer, The CW has made the first decisive move, announcing this morning that they've asked their studios to produce five or six more episodes of a half-dozen of their shows including freshman dramas Gossip Girl and Reaper and veteran hits One Tree Hill, Supernatural, and Smallville. Mediaweek announced that The CW hopes to get fresh episodes of those series on the air by mid to late-April. Gossip Girl has already been renewed for next season and Mediaweek reports that insiders think that series might return for round two as soon as August, which means the "summer hiatus" could be very brief for fans of Gossip Girl.

The site also reports that the network plans to order eight or nine more episodes of The Game, a second-year sitcom, for this season and that new episodes could get on the air as early as mid-March. Sadly, it doesn't sound like production will get amped up on Aliens in America, which the news service reports will continue to air a few in-the-can new episodes but will order no more for this season. They note that 18 episodes of Aliens in America have been produced, which is considered enough for a full first season, especially considering many of them have not aired. It's also still not announced if the excellent Aliens in America will be back for round two in the fall. Cross your fingers.

Mediaweek reports that Life is Wild and Girlfriends will definitely not be back this year. In fact, the long-running Girlfriends will not be back ever, as this was always supposed to be the last season and it doesn't really make sense to rebuild sets and amp up production just to end the series. The CW will meet with the creators to try and build a clip show that will serve as the Girlfriends series finale.
