One of the best movies of 2007 and an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Screenplay hits DVD this week, and will undoubtedly become one of the biggest hits of the season on the home market. In many ways, Michael Clayton fell under the radar when it was released in theaters but it's the kind of thriller that always does well on DVD. It's safe to say that it will do even better than the average thriller after the dozens of top ten lists it appeared on and the awards it earned at the end of the year. Michael Clayton is the kind of riveting DVD that movie-goers lament that "they don't make any more" and it's a must-own for serious movie fans.

To be blunt, thrillers don't get much better than Michael Clayton. It's a nearly flawless film about a fixer, played by George Clooney, for the law firm Kenner, Bach & Ledeen. He's stuck in a situation that would kill most men but his life experience as the man who cleans up other people's messes makes him one of the few people who could make it out alive. Clayton's not a man who gets guilty people off, but he does makes sure as much goes in his client's favor as possible. Now, after years of fixing, he basically needs to do that for himself. After six years of working on a multi-million dollar case for U/North, a fictional conglomerate, senior partner Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson) jumps off the deep end. He strips naked at a deposition and starts building the case against his firm's biggest client. Is Arthur really crazy? Can Michael Clayton pick up the pieces? Could anyone?

George Clooney has become one of the most interesting actors in Hollywood. Who else with similar A-list potential as Clooney takes risks like The Good German or Syriana? George could make purely Hollywood movies like the Ocean's flicks and still be a star, but he likes to take risks and Michael Clayton had the biggest risk-to reward-ratio of his career. After taking such risks, Clooney has embraced challenging material to become one of the better actors working today. He won the Oscar for Syriana and he's significantly better in Michael Clayton. Even if thrillers aren't your thing, check it out just for him.

Warner Brothers gives one of their best 2007 movies a near-perfect video and audio transfer, but kind of drop the ball when it comes to special features. What's included is great, but there are no behind-the-scenes featurettes or interviews and it seems odd that Clooney wouldn't have something to say about the performance of his career. Obviously that will have to wait for the inevitable special edition somewhere down the road. Michael Clayton does include a very interesting deleted scene that arguably shouldn't have been cut (a rarity in deleted scenes) with commentary by director Tony Gilroy and editor John Gilroy. The two also show up on a commentary track for the entire movie, which is simply fantastic. It's one of the best commentary tracks in recent memory, largely because Tony Gilroy is one of the most well-spoken, interesting guys that you're likely to hear on a DVD. He offers just the right amount of behind-the-scenes information, while keeping his track completely entertaining. Directors who have been tasked with audio tracks should listen to Gilroy's to hear how it's done, and fans of the movie will love it.
