The Savages on April 22
February 22, 2008

Chaos and comedy ensue when two middle-aged siblings find themselves plucked from their self-centered lives to arrange care for their elderly father in The Savages, debuting on DVD April 22 from Fox Home Entertainment. Nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Actress for Laura Linney (Kinsey) and Best Original Screenplay for writer/director Tamara Jenkins (Slums Of Beverly Hills), The Savages also features brilliant performances by Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) in his Golden Globe nominated role as an emotionally crippled forty-something and Tony Award winner Philip Bosco (Damages) as the titular family patriarch. Described by writer/director Jenkins as a coming of middle-age story, The Savages follows struggling East Village playwright Wendy (Linney) and her brother Jon (Hoffman), a neurotic college professor, as they revisit their uncomfortable past while settling the affairs of their undeserving and neglectful father (Bosco).

An official selection at over a dozen film festivals, garnering multiple Best Screenplay and Best Actress accolades and included on more than 50 critics’ Top 10 lists of 2007, The Savages is a brutal encounter with mortality told with uncommon humanity, wit and humor "...singularly funny and seriously moving," (Los Angeles Times). Beautifully executed, this indie gem features intriguing bonus features including behind-the-scenes featurettes, an uncut version of "The Sun City West Rhythm Tappers," director’s snapshots and more. The Savages will be available for the suggested retail price of $27.98 U.S. / $43.48 Canada. Prebook is March 26.

Synopsis:

Nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Actress for Laura Linney and Best Original Screenplay for writer/director Tamara Jenkins, The Savages centers on two siblings who are reluctantly forced to look back at their difficult family history. Having wriggled their way beneath their father’s domineering thumb, they are firmly cocooned in their own complicated lives - Wendy (Linney) a struggling playwright; Jon (Philip Seymour Hoffman) a neurotic college professor. When their father (Philip Bosco) begins to be consumed by dementia, they are forced to live together under one roof for the first time since childhood. Faced with complete upheaval and battling over how to handle their father’s final days, they are confronted with what adulthood, family and most surprisingly, each other are really about.
