New Images and Release Date for Batman: Gotham Knight
February 26, 2008

We have good news for the legions of worldwide Batman fans; 2008 might very well go down as the best ever year of Batman on film. The latest Bat goodness to spring from the Warner Home Video cave are three new images and a release date (finally) for Batman: Gotham Knight, which will undoubtedly kick-start the hype machine into high gear for Christopher Nolan's upcoming live-actioner The Dark Knight.

The cool thing about this incarnation of Batman in animated form is the fact that Warner has enlisted the right people for the job, which includes writers Josh Olson (A History of Violence), David S. Goyer (Batman Begins), Emmy winner Alan Burnett (Batman: The Animated Series), Jordan Goldberg (Associate Producer, The Dark Knight), and award-winning comics writers Greg Rucka and Brian Azzarello.

These days the success of comic book properties can be attributed to those in the business who grew up with their noses buried in comic books. Gone are the days where comic based films were greenlit by executives who knew nothing about the legacy of certain characters and what fans wanted to see on-screen from their favorite heroes. The other great thing about the new crop of animated super hero movies is that if the big screen versions go "boom" and fall flat with audiences, we always have the animated movies as a safety net.

Check out the latest images and what we've cobbled together from the official Warner press release...

Batman: Gotham Knight (July 8, 2008):

"DC Comics, Warner Premiere, Warner Home Video and Warner Bros. Animation have collaborated to give fans the unique original Batman experience of Batman: Gotham Knight, which arrives July 8, 2008 on DVD and Blu-ray. The original movie will also be available OnDemand and Pay-per-View plus for download on the same day.

"Batman: Gotham Knight is a fresh and energizing new entry into the Batman mythos, spinning out of a 40-year history in animation that includes the Emmy®-winning Batman: The Animated Series, widely considered a pivotal moment in American animation. A cross section of distinguished creators, award winning producers, and acclaimed writers weave six interlocking stories that reveal Bruce Wayne’s journey to Dark Knight, each with stylish art from some of the world’s most revered animation visionaries.

"Batman: Gotham Knight was headed up by an impressive list of directors who have all brought their distinctly unique anime styles to the classic Batman character. The Gotham Knight production was divided among three renowned studios - Studio 4ºC, Production I.G and Madhouse - and included the truly inimitable visions of directors Shojiro Nishimi, Futoshi Higashide, Hiroshi Morioka, Yasuhiro Aoki and Toshiyuki Kubooka.

"Batman: Gotham Knight serves up new adventures of Batman that spotlight several of Gotham City’s most dangerous villains, including the fearsome Scarecrow, the freakish Killer Croc and the unnerving marksman known as Deadshot. Batman: Gotham Knight is produced by Emma Thomas (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), Michael Uslan & Benjamin Melniker (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), Toshi Hiruma and Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series)."
