Doctors for Ledger Investigated
February 28, 2008
The doctors who prescribed enough pills for Heath Ledger that he could accidentally overdose on them are being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Agency, it was revealed by E! today. The untimely death last month of the Oscar-nominated star of Brokeback Mountain was ruled an accidental overdose of prescription medications and now everyone's wondering how Ledger got those medications and from whom. The DEA is reportedly investigating two doctors in connection with the death of the 28-year-old star, neither of whose names has been revealed. One of them is in Texas and the other is in California.
According to E!, the DEA has made it very clear that they are merely investigating the legality of the prescriptions and not the actual death of the actor itself. Both People and the New York Daily News cite sources claiming that it's unclear if the doctor's did anything wrong at all. They just want to get to the bottom of what happened. The Daily News reports that the two physicians are the ones who prescribed Oxycontin and Vicodin to Ledger, but it's still not clear if that means one prescribed one of the medications and the second doctor prescribed the other or if they both prescribed both. Either way, Oxycontin and Vicodin were merely a third of the drugs in the system of Heath Ledger when he died on January 22nd. He also had Xanax, Valium, temaxepam, and doxylamine in her system.
The DEA is reportedly investigating whether or not Ledger did some 'doctor-shopping', going to different doctors to get different prescriptions and more pills than one doctor would have dispersed. The cause of death in the Heath Ledger case was confirmed on February 6th and the DEA confirmed on that date that they had already launched an investigation and was issuing subpoenas to get the toxicology report along with speaking to the New York Police department about information about the case. They were trying to determine if the pills that were prescribed to Heath Ledger were in violation of federal law.
Three days after the cause of death and the apparent beginning of the investigation into the doctors that prescribed pills to Heath Ledger, his friends and family held a memorial service in Perth, Australia. It was a private memorial attended by Ledger's parents, his former fiancee Michelle Williams, and his former costar Cate Blanchett. E! reports that after the service, the mourners jumped into the ocean at Ledger's favorite hometown beach in honor of the free spirit of their loved one.
