The Return of Aliens in America with Lindsey Shaw

by Troy Rogers

Last year, when several promising new shows took to the airwaves, the new CW comedy Aliens in America had found its groove and was picking up steam before the writers' strike stopped it in its tracks. Like a lot of new shows on the air, Aliens in America was forced to take a break at the most crucial moment in its first season. Thankfully the strike has been settled and the stars of Aliens in America can now concentrate on making people laugh within the hilarious concept of a young Muslim exchange student who moves in with the Christian Tolchuck family in Wisconsin.

With the strike now in the rear-view mirror, Aliens in America returns to the The CW airwaves on March 2 at 8:30pm for the first episode of an eight week run. Fortunately, The Deadbolt managed to catch up with the casually cool Lindsey Shaw, who plays popular high-schooler Claire Tolchuck. While on the phone, we found out what fans can expect in the upcoming episodes, what’s in store for her character, her favorite Claire moment, and what it's like to be a young actress in today's Hollywood.

LINDSEY SHAW: Troy, what's up? How are you?

THE DEADBOLT: I’m doing awesome, thanks. So I was wondering what you did during the writer’s strike?

SHAW: What did I do? I hung out with my friends and I moved into my own apartment. It was really fun, I got a lot of school done. I just caught up on a lot of stuff that you don’t really get a chance to do on-set.

THE DEADBOLT: Did you have a "Plan-B" if things went on too long?

SHAW: No. I was really putting all of my eggs in one basket that it would get solved and that there wouldn’t be another strike after that with the actors. This was pretty much my only option.

THE DEADBOLT: It must have been tough to have that break in the show's momentum.

SHAW: Yeah, it was such a bummer because we were towards the middle/end of our season and everybody’s character was developed and we were really getting into it with a good rhythm. It was a bummer to have to stop.

THE DEADBOLT: So where do things pick up with Claire since we last saw her?

SHAW: Claire is getting a lot more feisty. I think that she is going to get in a lot more trouble with boys, and she has a lot to learn there. I think a lot is going to happen with boys. She’s going to make a lot of new friends at school and I think she’s going to play her hand at how popular she can be. That kind of thing.

THE DEADBOLT: I spoke with Dan and Adir last year and I was wondering what you find is the best part of working with the guys?

SHAW: They’re hysterical. They’re so funny and they’re just an absolute blast to work with. They make jokes all of the time and it’s just one thing after another with them.
