Gossip Girl Gets Second Season
March 4, 2008
Come on CW! If you're going to renew Gossip Girl for a second season, can you please spread the sophomore love to the far superior Aliens in America and Reaper? Do we have to beg? Those two shows haven't gotten the pick-up yet but Gossip Girl will return for a second go-around, some say as early as this summer. The news broke late yesterday that, following some very early renewals by ABC, The CW had given the green light to Gossip Girl. The show doesn't have spectacular ratings but it does have a cult following and a very loyal fan base. The series has averaged a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 and 2.6 million viewers - low numbers for sure but high enough for The CW, especially considering its loyal fans, something not a lot of shows on the network have (except Reaper!).
The CW also announced that they are renewing Smallville for an eighth season, Supernatural for a fourth season, One Tree Hill for a sixth season, Everybody Hates Chris for a fourth season, and America's Next Top Model for an eleventh and twelfth cycle. No news on the underperforming but critically acclaimed Aliens in America and Reaper. Reaper returns on April 22nd for five post-strike episodes and if you want the show to return, you better watch. Aliens in America returned on Sunday for eight episodes, ending its 18-episode run. Interestingly, The Hollywood Reporter wrote and it could have been picked up by other outlets - "Aliens already complete its 18-episode run." They already completed shooting but the episodes have NOT aired, which is what the average reader would probably think. We don't usually correct other news outlets, but we love Aliens in America and it's struggling enough that we don't need THR implying that it's not on the air any more.
They did note that The CW has yet to comment on the fate of Reaper or Aliens in America but that two other new shows that debuted in 2007, Life is Wild and Online Nation, have already been canceled. The other recent development in the world of The CW was the cancellation of WWE SmackDown! last month. That TV staple is likely to find an audience on another network.
