Fincher to Make Heavy Metal Movie
March 14, 2008
Just when you think he can't get any cooler, David Fincher continues to rule more every day. It was announced last night that the director of Se7en and Zodiac is spearheading a project based on the '70s sci-fi fantasy magazine Heavy Metal, which was already made in animated form twice. The project will feature eight or nine short films, one of which will be directed by David Fincher, and all of which will definitely be for adults only. The magazine featured the work of Harlan Ellison, H.R. Giger, and Robert Silverberg and was huge in the late '70s and early '80s. All of the segments in the film will be animated and done by a different director.
According to today's Variety, Heavy Metal will also feature segments directed by Kevin Eastman, the co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Tim Miller, who is the head of Blue Studios, the group that will handle the animation for the R-rated, adult-themed feature. The film will be produced by Fincher, Eastman, and Miller and will apparently get it's other five or six directors shortly.
David Fincher recently wrapped shooting The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, which will be released by Paramount on December 19th. He also recently announced that he would develop the Charles Burns graphic novel Black Hole and he is working on Torso and The Killer for Paramount too. And we hope he takes a look at the script for World War Z floating around. He'd be perfect for it. Miller is working on writing, directing, and producing Rockfish and Blur Studios has reached fame animating video games, including the recent Transformers: The Game. We'll keep you updated on Heavy Metal news as it hits.
