A Sarah Marshall Vacation with Kristen Bell

by Jordan Riefe

After breaking out with fans as the popular teen hottie super sleuth Veronica Mars, it wasn't long before Kristen Bell returned to TV for a stint in The CW series Gossip Girl. The same year in 2007, Bell found herself back on one of the most popular shows on TV when she landed a role on NBC's super-human hit Heroes. With five upcoming big screen projects on her slate over the next couple of years, Kristen Bell will be seen next with actor Russell Brand in the upcoming Judd Apatow produced comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, about two ex-lovers who unexpectedly collide in Hawaii after a fresh break-up and one who has already found a new romantic partner. With the film set for release on April 18, The Deadbolt caught up with Kristen Bell while on a press tour for Sarah Marshall where the Heroes hottie dished the dirt on choreographic sex scenes, faking orgasms, being the world's sexiest vegetarian, the status of her upcoming projects, and why she loves attending Comic-Con each year.

Kristen Bell on the quirky sex scenes in Sarah Marshall:

"We were actually thrown into a room six days after we met and they said, ‘Go into the hotel bedroom and find like ten different awkward sexual positions.' Russell [Brand] and I both do yoga, so we were like, 'Well, okay. This is what we do for a living, so it’s part of the job.' Luckily I’m very comfortable with Russell and he’s - despite his image of being such a lady’s man on the street - really kind and very protective and sweet. Even though my character never had any nudity, it’s not the kind - even though everybody keeps talking about this full frontal and everybody has different opinions whether nudity should be in film or not, it’s done for the joke and not in an exploitative way. I was never asked to take my shirt off. It wasn’t one of those things where they were like, ‘Oh, you’re in a sex scene; just do it so we can have more boobs in an R-rated movie.’ But I still thought though that I am faking an orgasm on camera and my father will inevitably see this piece of film and that’s something to digest."

Bell on how it feels once a project wraps:

"I have absolutely, after every job I have, [the] ‘I’m never gonna work again’ syndrome. I don’t know if you’re familiar with an actor named Randy Graff, who lives in New York and won the Tony for Angels in America, but we did a play together a few years ago and she became a dear friend. I was just asking her, ‘Does that ever go away?’ I mean, she gets job after job and she is an unbelievable Broadway actress and in films as well. She said it never goes away, it’s just a fact. If you are loving what you’re doing, you’re always wanting more, and you’re scared there’s not going to be enough. Sort of how Gossip Girl came to fruition is because a week and a half after Dawn Ostroff unfortunately had to cancel Veronica Mars - she’s the head of The CW - I was just about to leave for Hawaii and I heard about Gossip Girl and that there was a narrator and I knew I probably couldn’t play sixteen anymore. But I called her up and I said, ‘Remember last week when you cancelled Veronica Mars? I happen to be out of work this Fall, can I have a narrating job?’ And I just pitched myself for it. So I think that’s one thing I learned from my father, how to be proactive. And I’m not an idiot, I’ve got a mortgage to pay and I was like, ‘I don’t want to be out of work for six months.' I’m lucky to have this job right now, but I don’t think that feeling ever goes away."

Bell on being a vegetarian:

"Here’s the thing, Russell’s been a vegetarian for about the same amount of time I think. I’ve been a vegetarian for 17 years and we used to have little arguments because we were both dubbed ‘Sexiest Vegetarian in the World’. And I thought, ‘How could [they] have done both of us?’ I checked out the record books and his is only ‘Sexiest in the U.K.’ So I politely threw that in his face for most of the movie and then only to have it thrown in my face that I lost the title this year to Carrie Underwood and he kept his title in the U.K. So that’s what you get for being cocky about eating sexy vegetables."
