The A-Team Movie Set for June 2009
March 20, 2008
After years of toiling in development hell, the much talked about big screen version of the popular 80s TV series The A-Team finally got off the ground and received the green light for production with director John Singleton at the helm. Although casting has yet to be announced, Variety reports that 20th Century Fox has slated The A-Team for a June 12, 2009 release. Despite its long history in development hell, the project finally found 3:10 to Yuma writers Michael Brandt and Derek Haas to work on the script, which will continue the adventures of the crack team of soldiers of fortune led by lead character Hannibal Smith.
Last year I had the good fortune to speak with legendary writer/producer Stephen J. Cannell, the man who created The A-Team, who, at the time, confirmed that the A-Team movie was still a go and that the story would reside in a completely different world than the TV series.
However, Cannell mentioned that Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies scribe Bruce Feirstein was still working on the script, but it's apparent that the scripting reigns have been turned over the Brandt and Haas. Although we haven't followed up on the story details since last year's chat, Cannell revealed in 2007 that Iraq would be replacing Vietnam as the backdrop for the movie. Given that Brandt and Haas are now attached to the script, it's anyone's guess as to what changes have been made and whether the Iraq backdrop is still intact.
